Reiki (pronounced "ray-key") is a form of energy medicine and a holistic healing system, as it supports the healing of the whole being. It is both an energy healing technique and a spiritual healing technique. Energy healing brings relief of pain and symptoms in the body, mind and emotions. Spiritual healing connects one with Universal Consciousness (the divine, or God), bringing spiritual growth by healing core patterns/issues and enhancing connection with spiritual source. No faith or belief is required to give or receive Reiki; it bridges all religions and cultures. Reiki can be used with people, animals, plants, and situations.
The word "Reiki" is derived from two Japanese words: Rei (Universal Life Force) and Ki (Energy). It is the energy that surrounds and fuels us in our daily lives. It is not the personal energy of the practitioner, but an endless supply of healing energy that can never be exhausted.
There are different beliefs about the origin of Reiki -- one is that it is based on Tibetan sutras (texts of Buddhism) written by monks. In the mid-19th century, a man named Mikao Usui, a Japanese doctor and monk, developed this healing approach and spiritual path, named it Reiki, and trained others in it. One of Usui's students further developed these teachings and opened his own clinic in Tokyo, where, in 1935, an American named Hawayo Takata went for treatment. Later, she trained in Reiki, became a Reiki Master, and is credited with introducing Reiki to the West in the late 1930s.
The Usui System of Reiki balances and strengthens the body's energy, promoting its ability to heal itself. Reiki is a safe and nurturing energy which, while being highly effective in the realm of personal growth and healing, is at the same time subtle and non-manipulative. Healing in a Reiki session is determined by the recipient. The power for healing lies within the client; the practitioner acts like a conduit or funnel for the Reiki, and the client draws the energy to support self-healing.
